Originally developed as a summer training program for cross-country skiers, Nordic walking has since become an independent sport. Unlike traditional walking, Nordic walking engages 80-90 percent of the muscles. The special poles used in walking relieve some of the load from the legs while also exerting pressure on the upper body, engaging the arms and back muscles. Additionally, the poles improve stability and balance. Nordic walking is not only a great social activity but also an excellent method for losing extra weight, maintaining heart and vascular health, and managing depression and anxiety.
